Use of sustainable Phase Change Material (PCM) in mortars for building energy efficiency

Abstract Academic and industrial research are moving towards the development of innovative solutions materials able to limit energy consumption for thermoregulation a building. One solution is use phase change (PCMs) that can absorb, store, release according their physical state changes when ambient temperatures changes. In this work, new sustainable PCMs were developed through “form-stable” method principles Circular Economy. The PCM consisted, in fact, an inert matrix (obtained as byproduct stone processing) impregnated by low toxic, flammable polymer, namely polyethylene glycol (PEG). PEG/stone composite used replace fine aggregates mortars based on different binders providing with performance. A comprehensive characterization was performed evaluating thermal stability efficiency. main properties (in fresh hardened states) or without analyzed. containing also subjected further investigations evaluate behavior response external climatic conditions. Encouraging results obtained, confirming effectiveness indoor environments.
